Royal Visits & Jubilee Celebrations

Royal occasions in the Wychwoods, 1897–2012

For more than a century, royal visits, coronations and jubilees have brought the communities of the Wychwoods together. Photographs in the Society’s archive record village celebrations, fancy dress, street parties, royal visitors and the people who took part.

This photographic story brings together some of those images, from Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 to celebrations for Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

1897

Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee

In 1897 the Wychwoods joined communities across Britain in marking sixty years of Queen Victoria’s reign. One surviving photograph records a Diamond Jubilee tea in the Wild Garden at Shipton-under-Wychwood, with local farmer and landowner John Maddox among those present.

1911

A Royal Visitor to the Wychwoods

Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein visited the Wychwoods in 1911. The Society’s photographs record her visit to St Michael’s School and Home at Shipton-under-Wychwood and her attendance at a fête at Bruern.

1937

Coronation Day in the Wychwoods

The coronation of King George VI on 12 May 1937 prompted extensive celebrations across the Wychwoods. The surviving photographs are particularly rich for Milton-under-Wychwood, where fancy dress competitions, village gatherings and celebrations on the Green were recorded, as well as events at Shipton Court.

1953

The Coronation of Elizabeth II

Elizabeth II was crowned on 2 June 1953. The Society’s collection includes a photograph of Coronation Day celebrations at Lyneham, recording how the occasion was marked locally.

1977

The Silver Jubilee

Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee brought another round of village celebrations in 1977. The photographic archive records fancy dress parades, gatherings in Coombes Close, celebrations at Shipton cricket ground and an ox roast on the Green at Milton-under-Wychwood.

1981

A Royal Wedding

On 29 July 1981, communities around the country celebrated the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. The photographic record includes celebrations in Shipton-under-Wychwood.

2009

The Princess Royal at Matthews Mill

A visit by the Princess Royal to Matthews Mill in Shipton-under-Wychwood was recorded in a small group of photographs in 2009. The archive includes images of the Princess Royal with Malcolm Cochrane, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Oxfordshire.

2012

The Diamond Jubilee

More than a century after Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the Wychwoods again came together for a Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Photographs in the archive record celebrations at Beaconsfield Hall in Shipton-under-Wychwood and events in Milton-under-Wychwood.
